Well, here I finally am...not with New Mexico pics, as I haven't gotten to going through all of them yet. I do have some photos of some of the work I created at Art & Soul 2008 a few weeks ago, though. I really enjoyed learning to work with beads on metal with Beverly Gilbert & to practice whimsical drawing with Carla Sonheim in their workshops. Here are some pics of the fun stuff we did in Carla's Practicing Whimsy workshop...

These were splotches of color Carla radomly placed on pieces of paper, & gave them to us to see what we could create with them...This was the day before we added our new little chocolate lab, Charlie Brown to our family, & the 4th picture down from the top looks a little like him...See pics of Charlie below, & click on the link to Kingsland Labs (where Charlie was born) in the links section!

Here is another set of drawings created with water color and an 05 Micron pen in Carla's workshop, using a little wooden dog prop as the subject...I think I really had dogs on the brain, don't you?!

If I had it to do again, I wouldn't include the back leg in the drawing above, even though it was viewable by me when I was drawing...I think it makes the pic look too cluttered in that area, and the pup looks sort of distorted.

I am in the process of altering the beads on the metal piece Beverly Gilbert helped me create in her Beads On Metal workshop, and I hope to upload a photo of it this coming week.

Hi there! I'll start, after my very long blog hiatus, by sharing with you some of the jewelry pieces I've created over the past 6 months...

This is a bracelet I made quite some time ago...It is the Crystal 'Splosion bracelet and one of my favorite designs. I learned it from Bonnie Mountain in her class at Bodacious Beads in Hillsboro. I used Swarovski crystals (approx 290 of them!) and seed beads in this one.

This is my Retro Sequin 'Splosion bracelet, which is the same pattern as the bracelet above, and was made with two different sizes of vintage sequins & seed beads.

This is the same pattern again but created with metal flower sequins, tiny round sequins and seed beads.

I learned this pattern from Tina Koyama in one of her classes at Bead Expo at the Portland Convention Center a few months ago. It is a little difficult to see it in this photo (click on the photo to view a larger version) but the center area is very 3-dimensional. This is created by using a great deal of tension while beading. Tina is a master at this so, if you want to learn to make this bracelet, I highly recommend a class with her.

This is one that I get so many compliments on! I just recently learned how to make it from my friend, Cyndi Uhlin, and it was made with dagger beads on a seed bead base...

And, last but not least, I took a metal-smithing class with Barbara Kennedy at Bodacious Beads recently, and this is my very first attempt at making a sterling silver lentil bead. Actual size is about 5/8". It was a lot of fun using files, flux and a torch...all new tools for me!

Speaking of new creations...The Portland Art Collective group I belong to met this past week to start planning our Open Doors 2008 Show and Sale, and our postcard (created by Robin Olsen, Lorraine Jones and her husband Scott Jones) is beautiful again this year. Hasn't everyone created really wonderful pieces of artwork...and this is just the proverbial tip of the iceburg! It's going to be an event to remember, so be sure to mark Dec. 5th (11am - 8pm) and Dec. 6th (11am - 5pm) on your calendars!

Hi Everyone! I've been absent here for quite a while but have recently been re-inspired to post due to a trip to Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Will post pics of our trip soon and also of the various art projects that have evolved over the past several months!

The next leg of our Baja trip took us to Loreto, which is 5 hours north of Todos Santos and on the gulf side of the peninsula. There is a whole lot of desert and not much else until 20 miles before Loreto, where the gulf makes its' presence known. I just love the view as you come down over a hill and see all that glistening water!

Loreto is a small fishing village with approx 7,000 people. It looks more like 2,000 people to me so, if you want a quiet peaceful vacation, it is the place to go! Here is a photo of the downtown artisans area where tourists can meander through the little shops...

If you follow the pick-up in the photo above a couple of short blocks, it will take you to the Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto Conchó (Mission Loreto), which was founded in 1697. It is sometimes considered "head and mother of all the Spanish missions in upper and lower California..."

Check out the wood work on the ceiling!

This hotel's lobby is very beautifully decorated, and there is a pool on the flat roof that has glass blocks as its' floor so that reflections of water can be seen when you look up at the ceiling when you are in the lobby! For some unknown reason, I didn't get a shot of it but here are a couple of photos of the lobby...

Our 10 days in Baja were really fantastic, and it was so delightful to walk off of the plane into bright sunshine when we landed in La Paz! We drove about an hour and a half to Casa Bentley in Todos Santos where it was wonderful to sit out under the stars at night on this patio just outside our room...

It was such a delight to see the sunshine streaming through the trees just outside our windowed-wall when we woke up each morning...

This is a piece of artwork that was in one of the Casa Bentley rooms...

I love how it opens up to reveal the full face...

And just look at this altered sewing machine!

There is a covered outdoor cocina (kitchen) to be used by all...

As you can see, by the reflection off of the table, the sun was shinning brightly here too! The cocina was very well-stocked with all the usual kitchen appliances and utensils but we chose to be 100% on vacation and enjoyed eating out instead.

The Hotel California (some say it is the same hotel the Eagles sing about in their song by the same name) is just a couple of short blocks from Casa Bentley, and we enjoyed their breakfast and dinner menu. It's really fun to eat here because it is so colorful! Take a look, and see if you don't agree...

This is the stairway to the group of tables on the Hotel's patio that are covered by a large roof. Most of the other tables on the patio are covered by a small palapa (a thatched umbrella made of palm frawns).

The Santa Fe Deli is not nearly as colorful but it is another great, close-by place to eat outside!

Now that I've thoroughly covered the food aspect of Todos Santos, we can move on to the real reason we went there!

Todos Santos is on the Pacific side and is about an hour and a half south of La Paz (on the gulf side) and an hour and a half north of Cabo San Lucas. We went to see the mama gray whales and their recently born young-uns. Here I am watching them in awe as the moms and calves seemed to be having a very joyful time frolicking in the water...

Guess this is a good time to give Ron some credit for some of these photos...He took the one above in addition to several other Baja photos. Here are a couple of photos to give you an idea just how close in to the water's edge the whales come!

And another wonderful whale photo. This one on the flip side...

At one point, they all got in a circle and started swimming around rather feverously...

For those of you who may not know, gray whales measure 46 feet long or more and weigh up to 40 tons, so these critters are BIG! They reach sexual maturity at 5-11 years of age, or when they reach 36-39 feet in length. Gestation is 12-13 months. The calf weighs 1,100-1,500 pounds, is about 15 feet at birth and nurses 7-8 months on milk that is 53% fat!

The gray whale averages 10,000 – 14,000 miles round trip in order to give birth to their calves. In October they begin heading south for their mating and calving lagoons in Baja California, Mexico from their feeding grounds in the Bering and Chukchi Seas. This journey takes 2-3 months, and the whales remain in the lagoons for 2-3 months so that the calves can build up a thick layer of blubber to sustain them and keep them warm during their 2-3 month northward migration in colder waters. Mother Nature just never ceases to amaze me!

Last but not least...We saw this PURPLE (my fav!) house on one of our walks to the main street in Todos Santos, and I just had to share it with you...

Well, here it is...Ron gave me a new digital camera as an early Valentine's Day gift, and I have been playing around with it. I think I still need to play with it some more but this is the best shot so far of the Swarovski sequin 'splosion bracelet I've been telling you about. I think there is just too much "bling" on this bracelet to be able to capture it as nicely as I would like but you can at least get the gist...

There are a total of 250 Swarovski crystal sequins on this one! I've started another bracelet using sequin crystals in blues and purples. Hopefully, I will have it completed within the next few weeks, and will share a photo with you then.

I did finish the 2 crocheted scraves yesterday, and am going to be playing with my new digital camera and doing mostly household chores today so I don't have any artsy photos to share with you this time. I dug into my photo archives, though, and found some pictures of these rather odd little creatures who reside near Ron's work...

They are Nutria...mom and young-un. Wow! Look at those orange teeth! They look like a vague cousin of the beaver, don't they? We did some checking, and found that the word "nutria" means "otter" in Spanish, and that Nutria are native to portions of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and Uruguay and are not indigenous to the State of Oregon.

Through more research, we found that hopeful investors started small captive colonies of Nutria in several locations in the United States, Canada, and many European countries in the 1930's. Even though the Nutria meat was low in cholesterol and high in protein and their fur abundant due to their size and high reproductive potential, the farms did not succeed. Do you think this was maybe because it was difficult for people to eat meat and/or use fur from an animal looking somewhat like a large rat? The animals either escaped or were intentionally released into the wild, which resulted in the wild populations present today in the U.S, Canada and Europe. And that is all I know about that! :~)

Ron captured this beautiful rainbow yesterday on his way home from work...This is one of the many reasons I love living in Oregon!

I put some finishing touches on my little collaged heart pins that I made at Art House and told you about a week or so ago. ..Here they are!

These were so much fun and so very easy to make! I used some paper I had designed and created with dye inks and brayers on chiri Thai kozo paper to cover the first heart. I am thinking about creating a patina on the wings but haven't made up my mind yet. What do you think?

By the way, if you haven't used this wonderful paper yet, you might want to give it a try...Once decorated, you can use it for giftwrap, collage and modge-podging just about anything!

I used various colors of pastel tissue papers and bits of an old paper placemat on the second heart. The little doo-dads you see on both the first and second heart are different sizes of red Diamond Dots.

The third heart is covered with a multi-colored tissue-like paper that had a few dark brown Oriental-looking marks on it. I embellished it with some jewel-like doo dads that I found laying on my worktable waiting to find a new home.

I received a lovely surprise in the mail yesterday! My friend Gwen (you remember, the one who brought me the oh-so-pretty tulips when she came over for lunch last week) sent me one of her beautiful collaged greeting cards wishing Ron and I a great time in Mexico. See for yourself if you agree with me about how beautiful it is...

We will be in La Paz, Todo Santos and Loreto for 10 wonderful days of sea, sun and simplicity...and Ron surprised me tonight with an early Valentine's Day gift of a new digital camera so I can take lots of photos to share with you!

Well, I'm off to finish a couple of crocheted scarves I started last year thanks to my friend Carol showing me how while we were at the beach this past weekend. I am counting myself so very fortunate to have such artsy and sharing friends!

It snowed at our house while I was away at a mini beach retreat over the weekend, and it just melted yesterday...What a pretty site it was to come home Monday evening to a few inches of snow on the front and back lawns!

My friends and I had such a great time at our little retreat. It was one of those weekends where everything just fell into place! Loading the car was a breeze, we saw a beautiful rainbow from one end to the other on the drive over, the weather was in our favor the whole time we were there, our antique shopping was very rewarding and the abundance of food we took was all very delicious and easy to prepare.

We talked, laughed, cried, walked on the beach, shopped, played with our arts and crafts projects and enjoyed an impromtu vintage pin/pendant workshop led by Jennifer as we created very fond memories for years to come. Here is a photo of the piece I made from an antique spice tin...

This was so very fun and easy to make...I can see some things I would do different next time (like not put the faux rivets across the top of the lettering, and maybe put two rows underneath "Seattle" instead) but I am very happy with my first attempt! I just have to add a pin backing with a bale on it, and I will be able to wear it as a pin or a pendant. Jennifer is a very apt and patient instructor, and we felt very fortunate to have her offer to teach us this great project!

While I was away having a grand time with my gal pals at the beach, Ron was out and about taking some great photos in the snow. Here is one for your viewing pleasure...

No, I didn't get lost, just sort of side-tracked! I am getting ready to go to the beach with 3 of my friends for a mini 4-day retreat so haven't taken the time to blog. I do have some photos to share with you, though, and wanted to do that before I leave.

Ron took a picture of the Swarovski sequin 'splosion bracelet I've been telling you about but, unfortunately, it didn't come out so good, so I will upload one later.

Instead, I'll share the freeform brick stitch heart I created in Tina Koyama's workshop at Art & Soul 2007...

Tina, by the way, is an excellent instructor, fantastic artist and a very nice lady. I would suggest that, if you get the chance to take a class or workshop with her, jump on it! Here is a link to her website...www.tinakoyama.com.

Ron won some online contests today, which included these photographs...The tulip is one from a bunch that my friend, Gwen, was so thoughtful to bring to me when she came out to play with our art projects last Tuesday. We got so busy talking that we didn't actually create much but it was a very fun day!

Be sure to read the label toward the top of the Red Rum bottle below closely. You are seeing the front of the bottle through the back of the bottle, with the front label reading backwards...

Anyone remember the movie "The Shining" and what was written backwards on the mirror"?

It is a bright, sunny, cold, crisp day so there is no excuse for me not to get out in the yard to finish up that last little area that needs tidying up but here I am anyway!

I met my friend, Jennifer, for lunch and a movie yesterday...We saw "The Bucket List" with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. We cried & laughed through the whole movie, and we both thought it was even better than we thought it would be!

I haven't quite finished my Swarovski sequin 'splosion bracelet yet but here is a photo of a vintage sequin 'splosion bracelet I learned how to make from Bonnie Mountain in a class at Bodacious Beads some time ago...

This is a very fun bracelet to make...It has approximately 250 vintage flat silver, pink and green sequins with tiny little flat copper and green ones added on top of them for accent. Bonnie is an excellent instructor who always makes sure everyone not only understands how to complete the project but also that you have a great time while doing it!

It's a really beautiful day (sunny & crisp) here, so I'm off for a walk to my local coffee house soon. Just wanted to stop by here to say hello and that I hope everyone had a pleasant weekend...

Saturday I started my sequin 'splosion bracelet using Swarovski crystal sequins, and it is very sparkly! I am having great fun with it, and hope to finish it this week...Seems like I hear myself say this a lot! :~)

Art House met Saturday evening, and we had lots of fun collaging on little heart pins that Sylvia so generously supplied for us. We used tissue and other papers, photos, paper place mats, golden wings, small buttons and a slew of other goodies on them. I'm still playing around with mine, and will share photos of them with you once they are done.

Yesterday I enjoyed an art supply shopping trip with a friend who says she has never done anything artsy/craftsy. We will be getting together this coming weekend to play with polymer clay. It's always fun to share an art or craft technique with someone who hasn't experienced it before!

Here are the photos Ron took this weekend of the vintage button bracelets I was telling you about...

The buttons I used in the top and bottom bracelets are diachroic, and sorry to say, you can't see the shimmer too well here. The top one is my favorite. Maybe because it was my first or possibly because I used smaller seed beeds to cover the jump rings. If you feel so inlcined, would love to hear which one you like best and why!

These were fun to make but a little rough on the hands because the jump rings that hold the bracelet together have to go through some fairly small holes in the pony (the bigger, black) beads. I tried making my own jump rings with a smaller gauge wire but the heavier gauge is needed for strength. I also looked for some pony beads with larger holes but haven't found any yet. Any of you out there know where I might find some?

The sun was out this morning when I woke up. What a glorious event! Those of us who live in the Northwest have learned to make the very best of the rare winter days when the sun blesses us with its company and/or it isn't raining! So I finally got out in the yard to do a bit of gardening I have been postponing due to the cold and rainy weather.

Speaking of gardening, here is the first 3-D piece I ever made from mostly recycled, found parts. I call her "Garden Muse", and she came to life so that I could gift her to one of my art buddies, Lenall, in our Portland Art Collective recycled art swap last year.

Her base is a candlestick holder I enjoyed finding at the Goodwill bins, and which I patina'd (Is that a word?). I found her "head" along side the house where the previous owner must have tossed it. It is an old style metal sprinkler head for a hose, and I rusted it then coiled copper and gold plated wires and stuck them in the little holes to create her hair.

Garden Muse evolved from there as I took bits of this and that I found in the yard or in my studio. Things like earrings I had purchased at an antique shop, an old glasses lens sample to cover a stamped face image, "wings" from an old steamer basket, a half acorn shaped like a heart from the yard, etc. I either patina'd or rusted most of these items to help them look more aged.

One of my goals is to start posting to my blog at least 5 days a week...I don't think this will be difficult because I really do enjoy it!

Amongst those things most precious to me is my dear, sweet (sometimes snotty) cat Mia. Here is a photo Ron took of Ms Mia for your viewing pleasure...

Anyone who has met Mia (or heard her in the background when I am talking to them on the phone) will attest to the fact that she is very vocal! She lets us know right at 5am, 12pm, 5pm and 10pm that it is time to feed her, and she continues to "talk" at us relentlessly until we do!

Ms Mia rules our home, and (like most cats) she can be the sweetest, loving kitty one minute and do 180 degree turnaround before you can blink! We love her, regardless, and have even postponed adding a dog to our family because we know she won't take to the idea much at all. Like I said...she does rule!

I have been thinking about other photos I would like to post here and, while digging into old computer files, I came up with a pre-digital camera photo of a seven foot mermaid who allowed me to bring her to life via paper mache when I was taking a 3-D art class several years back. Her name is Bernadetta, and I apologize for the poor photograph but you can at least get the general idea...

When I fist started this project, my plan was to make about a foot tall, red heart with short arms and legs that would allow it to sit on the edge of a table. I felt like I didn't have much say-so, though, as the heart began evolving into this very tall, very purple mermaid...Can you tell where the heart gave way to becoming Bernadetta?!

She was hanging from our ceiling when this photo was taken, where she resided until I donated her to the Y just before moving to Oregon. Bernadetta was to be sealed with a protective finish and hung from the ceiling in the indoor pool area where the kids take swimming lessons. I think of her from time to time, and hope she is being treated well.

Hmmm, the weekend is creeping up on us, and I hope Ron will find the time to take some photos of the three vintage button bracelets I finished recently so that I can upload them for you to see. Until then, here is one of the more intricate bracelets I really enjoyed playing with and watching evolve in 2007...

I learned this "Kandra's Ripple Bracellet" pattern from a great instructor, Bonnie Mountain, who teaches at Bodacious Beads in Hillsboro. This is the same pattern I used for the red and purple bracelet I shared with you yesterday. I'll be joining Bonnie again this Saturday to create a Sequin 'Splosion bracelet with Swarovski vintage sequins, and I look forward to sharing it with you sometime soon!

A very happy, healthy, creative and prosperous New Year is in my thoughts for us all, and 2008 finds me re-organizing my studio. Once this is complete, I will start giving the garage a shakedown to make room for some bigger, messier work I want to do this summer.

Ron, has really been enjoying photographing wildlife...He found a couple of Osprey nests this summer not too far from home, and we enjoyed going out and watching/taking photos of the parents feeding and caring for their offspring and watching as the chicks learned to fly and hunt for food on their own. The photo below of a young Osprey shaking the water off of his feathers after having unsuccessfully plunged into the river for a fish is one of my favorites. Ron is also currently taking photos of some Eagles and their nests...I will post photos later.

He is also participating in a photographic scavenger hunt through an online group. One of my favorites of his shots on the hunt list is this one of grape candy...

As for me, I am making very slow progress on getting my studio re-organized...I have so many thoughts in my head about creative projects but don't seem to be able to get past the part about getting organized so I can start making them a reality! :~)

Welcome! This is my first blog, and I have to say I feel a little intimidated but here goes...

I am a mixed media artist & crafter who has enjoyed being creative through choreography, hand-built ceramics, graphic design, Soul Collage, precious metal clay, printmaking, collage, paper making, paper design, acrylics, recycled assemblage, and recently, beading.

I really love putting different shades of colors or different colors, textures, sizes, and shapes of beads together to create a piece of jewelry that can help a woman feel more beautiful and playful when she wears it.

The Portland Art Collective is a group of 25 woman whom I feel very fortunate to be amongst and who continuously inspire, support and challenge me. We experienced our 1st annual "Open Doors 2007" show and sale on Dec 7th and 8th...it was a lot of hard work, a whole bunch of fun and very successful! Here is how it looked just prior to the front doors opening...

Art House is another group I enjoy...we meet once a month for a demo led by an attendee who wants to share her artsy knowledge with others. This is where I was invited to facilitate a Soul Collage session, have been reminded how to make polymer clay canes, to creatively cover a journal with embossed metal tape and to make a bracelet with vintage buttons...what creative times I have had in 2007!
